Lex’s SMART Goal

By July 16th, as part of the School of Rock class, I will have learned a song on the guitar to expand my understanding on music as a musician and as a beginner guitar player for my independent class project.

July 9th Update

I chose and started the song to learn. The song is “Jealous” by Eyedress. I will be learning the riff from it and using Songsterr to help. I chose this song because I believe I can play it and it’s at my level where I’m at right now.

July 12th Update

Today I practiced the song I’m learning. I can’t quite play at the tempo they want me to but I’m working at my own pace. I am working to get better at transitioning between the notes because I struggle at that. I struggle at keeping up with the original tempo, but I plan to improve.

July 13th Update

Today I practiced more and I thought it was more accurate than the other times. I’m working on accuracy and that’s coming along! I also was able to play with the video in 0.75 speed.

July 14th Update

Today I practiced my song regarding accuracy and tempo and I’ve noticed I have improved. Regarding tempo, it’s still a bit iffy, but I believe I’m going a bit faster. I also think accuracy is improving. I’m also working on making it less sloppy.

July 15th Update

Today I impulsively started learning the other guitar parts to see if I could make it seem less dull. When I record just the part I’ve been learning, it seems dull and empty. But every time I try to combine the three parts, they don’t mix well. So tomorrow I will continue on trying to get them to mix. If I can’t figure it out, I will just have the guitar part I’ve already learned.

July 16th Update

Today I got everything I needed to record. I had a hard time with matching the other parts up so I just added a part on the piano to make it sound less lonely. It’s only 30 seconds because it’s the main melody and it’s the same thing over and over again for the whole song.

Final Result

Training Resources

The main source I used was Songsterr but I also used YouTube to help me practice.

Reactions to the Final Version

“Guitar was pretty in it’s simplicity.”

-Daniel

“The chords sounded really pretty.”

-Hem

“The chord progressions were really good.”

-Sofi

Self-Evaluation of Final Version

I felt like I could have added more to it and cleaned the guitar up a bit more. But honestly I don’t think it was horrible like I normally do. I usually am really harsh but this time I remembered that I was a beginner at guitar. I thought it turned out pretty okay.

Grammar and Spelling

I used Grammarly to spell check a lot of the time but the blog also has a built-in spell check.

21st Century Skills Demonstrated

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving)

One of the ways I showed this was that I came up with an idea to fix something that bothered me. I felt like my final project sounded empty but I was struggling with the other guitar parts so I added in some improvised piano.

Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)

I communicated with one of my classmates who has played guitar before and asked for advice on how to improve.

Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)

Some tools I used was YouTube to help me with learning new things.

Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)

One of the ways that show this is that I got more resources that could help- me later in life.
